A glimpse into the divide between mass and elite in American society.
“In antiquity it was land and lineage that defined privilege. In our day, prep schools, top-ten university degrees, formal speech, correct diction, proper manners, and high-cult allusions all mark off the elite, and hide the fact that their position comes from money and connections as much as merit. Someone like Trump, who violates every one of these canons and enjoys the support of the “bitter clingers” and “deplorable” masses, infuriates the elite by challenging their right to rule by virtue of their presumed intellectual and cultural superiority.”

Yep, that’s it. And all I have to say about that is they should have invited him to the parties and into “polite society”. But they didn’t. And the rest is history.

“No one was more surprised than I, when Princeton University accepted me for a Graduate Assistantship. After all, though my grades at Arkansas community college and the University of Arkansas (GO HOGS!) were top-notch, my senior thesis was described as at a PhD level, and I had been accepted into Phi Theta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa (and won two “prestigious awards”, at least, at Arkansas schools), I had never taken the SAT, or any other sort of examination normally taken by prospective students. What is more, my “academic record” in High School was dismal … straight “A’s” until I decided that I hated it, in the middle of my sophomore year, finishing with a 1.9 GPA on a 5-point system.
I’ve written elsewhere on FPM about my experiences in Princeton, but one was relevant to this article. Talking to a Professor and two other grad students, I expressed my surprise that I had matriculated at such a prestigious university. One of the grad students said, quite casually, that “the Administration probably hadn’t filled its quota of hillbillies, for that year.”
I protested that I grew up in Chicago. The same grad student asked, “What did your father do?” I replied that he had been a master mechanic, and owned a chain of service stations.
“Where did you live, in Chicago?, came the reply.
“About seven blocks west of Wrigley Field.”
He sighed and remarked, “Working class, then. Good for you. You are officially this year’s fortunate hillbilly. Congratulations!”
Repressing my urge to do an official smackdown of the punk (who was the son of a multi-millionaire … who was also the son of a multi-millionaire, and who was also the son of a multi-millionaire, all from Boston) … I smiled glibly and did my best “toothless hillbilly” smile.
The Elite … who are also the Left … not only look down their smug noses at those of us who are “less fortunate” than they … condescension is one of their primary abilities … but they really don’t like us, at all. They rule this nation with an iron fist, and though they sometimes allow us to talk to them, they don’t really listen to what we have to say. What we say is irrelevant to what used to be called “the Beautiful People”.
Well, we “hillbillies” did our smackdown of the Elite, last November, when we elected Donald John Trump to the Presidency. He may be a multi-billionaire, but it’s new money … not old money. He may have gone to the Wharton School of Business, but like me, he didn’t qualify for inclusion into their elite clubs. He’s the ultimate outsider, who dares to tell them that he knows what is best for continuing the exceptional nature of the United States of America.
This, they cannot stomach. This keeps them up at night. They will never stop their attack on Mr. Trump. And we will not stop supporting him. God Bless President Trump …
… and now, for the most horrible thing I can say: MAGA!”
